Seva First Innovation Challenge 2026: Innovation, Practical Skills & Student Solutions
The Seva First Innovation Challenge (SFIC) 2026 is an innovation initiative designed to encourage students and young innovators to identify real-world problems and develop practical, feasible and scalable solutions.
For ITI and Polytechnic students, the Technical level provides an opportunity to apply hands-on engineering, fabrication, electronics and process skills to meaningful problems. The challenge also includes Junior and Open participation levels for school students and undergraduate students/research scholars.
The current official South Zone edition covers Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Puducherry. Participation is institution-led, meaning an eligible school, ITI, Polytechnic or college/university nominates a coordinator who registers the institution and submits student or team entries.
The official challenge portal opened on 25 September 2026, and the current submission window is 25 September to 24 October 2026.
The challenge is organised around five national themes and two innovation tracks, allowing participants to work on both technology-based solutions and innovative service, business-model or governance solutions.
Important: Dates, participating regions, eligibility requirements and submission procedures can change according to official notifications. Students and institutions should verify the latest information on the official Seva First portal before submitting an entry.»
Who Can Participate in Seva First Innovation Challenge 2026?
Seva First Innovation Challenge 2026 has three participation levels. The level depends on the participant's current stage of education.
1. Junior Level — School Students
This level is designed for school students who want to identify real-world problems and develop practical ideas or solutions.
Students can work on problems related to sustainability, health, education, safety, agriculture and other areas covered under the official challenge themes.
2. Technical Level — ITI & Polytechnic Students
The Technical Level is particularly relevant for students pursuing technical and vocational education through ITI and Polytechnic institutions.
Participants can use their practical skills in areas such as:
- Mechanical and manufacturing applications
- Electrical and electronics solutions
- Automation and robotics
- Fabrication and workshop-based solutions
- Energy and sustainability
- Maintenance and safety
- Digital and technology-enabled solutions
- Other practical solutions relevant to the official challenge themes
For ITI and Polytechnic students, the challenge can be a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning and workshop skills with a real-world problem.
3. Open Level — Undergraduate & Above
The Open Level is intended for undergraduate and above-level participants, including eligible postgraduate students and research scholars, according to the current official participation rules.
Participants at this level can develop technology solutions, business-model ideas or governance-oriented solutions within the official challenge framework.
Important: Institution-Led Participation
Participation is institution-led. Students should not assume that they can independently register as individual participants.
An eligible institution appoints or identifies a coordinator who manages the registration and submission process according to the current official instructions.
Eligible institutions and participants should check the official Seva First portal for the latest eligibility conditions, registration process and submission requirements before applying.

Two Innovation Tracks
The challenge has two innovation tracks, and both tracks have equal standing.
Track A — Product or Technology Solution
This track is for solutions that can be built, demonstrated and potentially deployed.
Examples may include:
- Physical devices
- Engineering prototypes
- Machines or mechanisms
- Materials
- Manufacturing or process solutions
- Electronics and automation systems
- Software systems
- Technology-enabled solutions
For the Technical Level, ITI and Polytechnic participants are expected to demonstrate a working prototype for Track A.
Track B — Business Model or Governance Solution
This track is for innovative ways of delivering services, organising processes or solving problems through business, institutional or governance approaches.
Examples may include:
- New service-delivery models
- Business or financing models
- Process improvement
- Community-based solutions
- Institutional innovations
- Governance solutions
- Process re-engineering
For the Technical Level, participants working under Track B are expected to develop a costed and field-tested delivery model.
Choosing the Right Track
A participant should choose the track according to the nature of the proposed solution.
If the solution needs to be built or demonstrated as a product, machine, device, software or technical system → Track A.
If the main innovation is a service, delivery system, business model, institutional process or governance approach → Track B.
Both tracks are available across the Junior, Technical and Open participation levels, subject to the official challenge requirements.
How to Participate in Seva First Innovation Challenge 2026
Participation in the Seva First Innovation Challenge is institution-led. Eligible institutions should follow the current instructions on the official Seva First portal.
Step 1: Institution Participation
An eligible school, ITI, Polytechnic or higher-education institution should identify the appropriate institutional coordinator for the challenge.
The coordinator is responsible for managing the institution's participation and coordinating student or team submissions.
Step 2: Check the Appropriate Participation Level
Before preparing a submission, confirm the participant's level:
- Junior: School students
- Technical: ITI and Polytechnic students
- Open: Undergraduate and above, according to the official eligibility requirements
Step 3: Select a Problem
Choose a genuine problem that fits one of the five official challenge themes.
A strong problem statement should clearly explain:
- What is the problem?
- Who is affected?
- Where does the problem occur?
- Why does the existing solution need improvement?
- What practical outcome is expected?
Step 4: Select the Innovation Track
Choose the appropriate track:
Track A — Product or Technology Solution
Choose this when the proposed solution is primarily a product, prototype, machine, device, software or technology-based system.
Track B — Business Model or Governance Solution
Choose this when the main innovation is a service model, business model, delivery system, institutional process or governance solution.
Step 5: Develop and Test the Solution
Do not stop at an idea. Develop the proposed solution according to the requirements of the selected level and track.
For a technical prototype, focus on:
- Working principle
- Design or system architecture
- Materials/components
- Construction or development
- Testing
- Safety
- Cost
- Practical usability
- Scope for improvement
Where possible, test the solution in a realistic environment and document the results.
Step 6: Prepare the Submission
Prepare the information and supporting material required by the official challenge portal.
Depending on the selected level and track, this may include information about:
- Problem statement
- Proposed solution
- Innovation
- Prototype or implementation
- Testing or validation
- Expected impact
- Cost and feasibility
- Team or participant details
Participants should follow the latest official submission format and instructions rather than relying on an older registration guide.
Step 7: Submit Through the Official Process
The institutional coordinator should complete the submission through the official Seva First platform within the announced submission period.
Before final submission, carefully check participant details, institution information, supporting documents and required solution details.
Important: The registration interface, required documents and submission procedure may be updated by the organisers. Always verify the latest instructions on the official Seva First portal before submitting.
